I was just looking for something random to listen to in my iTunes, and came across 'Cannonball' by The Breeders, and as happens shit loads with me, it set me off on a big train of thought.
I (like most people I assume?) relate most music to a time/place/person, and 'Cannonball' is no exception. Cos I spent most of my teenage years skateboardin/BMXin, the music from their respective videos has influenced a lot of my taste. Its broad to say the least.
This song comes fro the 1994 Standard 'Fat Ones' video, and was the music for Joe Rich's section. I just found it now on YouTube and the visuals brought back even more memories:
At the time I first saw this (not til '95 when a mate bought it - bare in mind I was at school at the time and the internet was still shittin green!), Standard were making big moves in BMX. Guaranteed components with full replacement policies, all of the sickest riders of the time (Joe Rich, Luc-E, Paul Osicka, Chad DeGroot etc), and run/owned by two heavy weights who knew the industry inside out from their years of experience; Rick Moliterno & Krt Schmidt.
Anyway, before I fill an entire page reminiscing about my youth/BMX/the 90's etc, I'll list the things which I said in my head while watchin the vid:
Mat Hoffman's BS Comps in OKC
Neoprene shinpads (Hammerz!!)
Grind discs / bashguards
Scrap Skatepark
Props
Below-the-knee 'shorts'
Poorboy Clothing
High seats!
Southsea bowls
KOC
The Parisian Hotel, Southsea
Riding (as would be expected!) is WAYY sicker now, I'm no rose-tinted idiot, but I do like glimpsing at the past occasionally.
